A Hallmark is a stamp or mark which is applied to items of jewellery by teh Assay Offices of Britan as a guarantee of Authenticity.
Hallmarks consist of four componants, which together act as a safeguard to those purchasing Precious Metals. These four componants are:
The sponsor mark. This usually signifies the manufacturer of the piece.
The standard mark which denotes the precious metal content of the item.
The Assay Office Mark (London, Birmingham, Sheffield or Edinburgh).
The date letter which shows the year in which the piece was Hallmarked.
