Amethyst is a variety of Crystalline Quartz often used in Gemstone jewellery.
Amethyst ranges in colour from pale violet to deep purple and can be transluscent or opaque.
The word Amethyst comes from
Greek and means "not drunken". This is possibly due to a belief that Amethyst can ward of the effects of alcohol, but could also be a reference to the wine-like colour of this popular Gemstone.
Cut Amethysts are often graded using the terms Siberian, Uruguayan or Bahain; to represent high medium and low grade respectively.
